What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.

Spelling Bee
Join us for our exciting Spelling Bee, where students showcase their spelling skills, boost their confidence, and celebrate the joy of words! This fun and engaging competition for K - 6 students encourages learning, teamwork, and friendly rivalry. Whether a participant or a supporter, the Spelling Bee promises an inspiring experience for all!
Public Speaking
At Metford Public School, all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 are given the opportunity to participate in the Premier’s Public Speaking Challenge. Students learn to communicate their ideas with clarity, confidence, and purpose. They develop skills in speech writing, persuasive speaking, and effective delivery while exploring a range of contemporary and thought-provoking topics. The program encourages creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression in a supportive and engaging environment. Students engage in prepared and impromptu speaking which supports their growth in confidence and the ability to speak in front of large audiences. Those who show a particular aptitude in this area are also able to demonstrate these skills at regional events alongside peers from other schools.
Debating
Our school identifies and supports students with high potential through targeted enrichment, extension and extra-curricular opportunities such as debating,
During the Premier’s Debating Challenge, students learn how to think critically, build persuasive arguments, and communicate their ideas with confidence. They develop skills in teamwork, active listening, quick thinking, and respectful rebuttal while exploring current issues and diverse perspectives. The program encourages clear reasoning, creativity, and collaboration as students debate topics relevant to the world around them.
- Participation in sport coaching programs
- Participation in PSSA Gala Days, featuring sports such as soccer, touch football, rugby league, rugby sevens, Oztag, netball, basketball, and cricket
- Involvement in athletics, swimming and cross-country carnivals
- Regional representation in athletics, swimming and cross-country events
- Swimming scheme program
- Leadership opportunities through the Learning to Lead program and by organising lunchtime and recess sports competitions for OzTag, soccer and basketball
- Development days with activities including ultimate frisbee and gymnastics
- Programs run by external providers, including ultimate frisbee, gymnastics and athletics
Athletics
Students are able to attend the athletics carnival where they can represent MPS and show their athletic ability
They are given the opportunity to represent MPS at PSSA competitions, local gala days and Hunter PSSA sporting trials. The program is a great opportunity for students to develop their talents and skills in the sport of netball.
Swimming Scheme Program
Students aged 8 years and up have the valuable opportunity to participate in the annual two-week Swim School program. This intensive program focuses on building water safety skills, improving swimming techniques, and boosting confidence in the water. Designed to cater to a range of skill levels, the Swim School helps students develop essential abilities for lifelong aquatic enjoyment and safety.
Development Days
This year, our primary and infant students have enjoyed exciting Sport Development Days focused on building skills, teamwork, and fun! Primary students had a blast learning Ultimate Frisbee, while our youngest learners explored the basics of Gymnastics. These activities promote active lifestyles and encourage students to discover new talents in a supportive environment.

Learning to lead
At MPS, we challenge our students to think, create, lead and grow every day. Our Stage 3 Learning to Lead program ensures students develop their skills in the social emotional domain of High Potential and Gifted Education. Students in year 5 take on a leadership and coaching role for students in younger years. They plan and deliver structured PE lessons to build on student’s fundamental movement skills. The program is a great opportunity for students to develop their leadership talents and skills prior to student leadership elections held in term 4.
School Leadership Team
Primary school student leaders are enthusiastic role models who inspire their peers through positive actions and teamwork. They help build a supportive school community by leading activities, representing their classmates, and promoting values like respect, kindness, and responsibility. Through these roles, student leaders develop confidence, communication skills, and a strong sense of belonging.

Music - Guitar Club
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced player, come strum, learn and jam with fellow guitar enthusiasts. Explore different styles, improve your skills and have fun making music together!
Drama
Our Drama program gives our high potential and gifted primary students a fun and creative space to explore acting, storytelling, and teamwork. Through exciting games, role-plays, and performances, students build confidence, imagination, and communication skills. Drama helps our young learners express themselves and discover the joy of performing in a supportive and inspiring environment.
Starstruck
Step into a dazzling world of music, dance, and unforgettable moments with Starstruck! This dynamic program/show celebrates emerging talent, showcasing the brightest stars as they shine on stage and reach for their dreams.
